Patience, an Afea Carer in Oxley Park, provides support to our clients in our Oxley Park Supported Independent Living home. True to her name, Patience exhibits patience and compassion toward the residents of Oxley Park Unit 1, whom she looks after.
24-hour Care
Participants in the same supported independent living home may require different levels of assistance. According to her, Brendon requires “full assistance” while Marco and Tristan (watch our interview!) require only prompting for certain tasks and know to ask for help when they need it. When we visited Patience in Oxley Park, she was on her way to bring Brendon to his day program.
“We do it together, every staff here do help, do the same work that I’m doing,” she explains. “This house is 24-hour care – morning, afternoon and night.”
Passion for helping people
Originally from Liberia, Patience moved to Australia in 2005. She had years of experience in aged care before becoming a disability support worker. “When I was back home, I did look after my grandmother, and ever since then I just have the passion of looking after people that need help.”
She said she had tried working in other companies and in other roles, but always found herself returning to support work. “I worked with so many different companies trying to do different things but, I don’t find myself doing that.”
At Home with Afea
Patience has been a part of the Afea family since 2021. She feels at home and supported in Oxley Park. She knows she can always turn to Afea’s Accommodation Manager Sri and Operations Manager Pravin if she needs help.
“It’s lovely out here, and the main thing is the communication is really good. Sri is very understanding and supportive and Pravin offers words of encouragement.”
