Welcome to Mindful in May in 2023! Mindful in May is a global campaign that encourages everyone to begin a daily mindfulness practice. Mindfulness is slowing down and being fully present in the present moment. It helps reduce the noise in our minds and is one way for us to combat the stresses of daily life.
We encourage mindfulness at Afea as it helps us work with clarity, intention and reduced stress. We recognise the importance of taking care of ourselves and our mental health so we can continue helping the people in our community.
Here’s how we celebrated this month:
Week 1: Hat Party for our AFR Hat Trick
Sharing good food and celebrating wins are definitely great ways to promote positive mental health! We kicked off our month-long mindfulness activities by celebrating our AFR win and enjoying a Mexican fiesta.
We also reminded staff to reflect and find assistance through our EAP provider, Leora.
Week 2: Welcome to Gratitude Week
This week is all about gratitude.
One-word openers: We challenged all teams to start one (or more) of their meetings by sharing, in one word, something you are grateful for that day. It’s a simple check-in activity that allows us all to share our headspace before getting into the nitty gritty of the meeting itself.
Certificate of Appreciation. We sent staff a blank Certificate of Appreciation that they can fill out and send to colleagues.
Of course, we want to thank YOU for your support of our mission ❤️
Week 3: Feed Your Mind – Afea Library Launch
Reading regularly, especially personal development content, will likely inspire your creativity, guide you to make better choices and take positive actions more often.
We were honoured to receive a donation from client Hem Sidharth Chandran of his book at the launch of our new initiative, an in-office “street library” where any Afean can give a book, take a book and read a book. You can read more about our launch here.
Week 4: Focus – Guided Meditation with Esha Oberoi
We ended our mindfulness activities for the month of May with a focus on focus, highlighting the importance of reducing stress and removing distractions. The team gathered for a meditation session led by our founder and Director, Esha Oberoi. She shared her experience with stress and how meditating every day helped her fight negative self-talk, develop resilience and find inner peace, which gave her the strength to face life’s challenges.
