How NDIS Plan Management works - Afea Care Services
April 24th 2023

If you’ve been wondering how NDIS Plan Management works, you’ve come to the right place. Plan management is a type of disability service funded by the NDIS to assist NDIS participants in managing their plan funding.

Plan management providers, who are known as plan managers, can assist you in many ways:

  • Pay your service providers promptly for supports delivered
  • Keep a record of how you spend your NDIS funding by receiving and managing invoices
  • Provide regular statements to help you keep track of your spending
  • Help you increase your financial and plan management skills
  • Give financial advice with regards to your NDIS plan

While NDIS participants are free to manage their own plan funding – this is called self-management – having a plan manager removes the additional pressure and responsibility of managing the admin side of reaching your life goals.

How can I get plan management?

At the start of your plan

Request for plan management at your initial meeting with your NDIA Planner. There are no conditions attached to receiving funding for plan management, but this is something you need to request.

Funds for NDIS plan management will appear under Capacity Building – Improved Life Choices. As it has its own funding line item, paying for a plan manager will not take funding away from the other services that you need.

During your plan reassessment

Every NDIS plan comes with a reassessment date (previously called a review date), which usually falls 12 months after your plan starts. You can request for plan management during your check-in with the NDIA

Mid-plan

You may want to add plan management even before your plan reassessment date. If this is the case, call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 to discuss your request.

What is included in my plan management funding?

Plan management funding includes:

  • a plan management establishment fee
  • a monthly processing fee

The establishment fee covers the initial cost of establishing financial arrangements between the participant and the plan management provider.

In order to claim the establishment fee, your chosen provider should meet with you, the participant, and formalise the arrangements in a service agreement.

The monthly processing fee, on the other hand, covers the ongoing costs a plan management provider incurs in supporting your needs and ensure the effective financial administration of your NDIS plan.

Can my plan manager claim all my plan funds at the start of the plan?

No. A plan manager can only submit claims for supports and services after they have been provided.

Once an invoice or receipt has been issued and sent to a plan manager, they will make a claim for that amount from the NDIS.

All plan funds remain with the NDIS until a plan manager submits a claim for that amount.

Once the claim is submitted and approved, the funds are released, which your plan manager can then use to pay your service provider.

What if I run out of funding?

Your plan manager should work with you to reduce the risk of overspending. If your NDIS plan funds are being spent faster than anticipated and might run out before your next reassessment, your plan manager should discuss this with you.
