How Afea helped Rachael return to the community - Afea Care Services
November 10th 2022

When our client Rachael wrote back to us for this interview, she said she had just gone for a walk and a swim at the pool.

This may seem like a normal day for some, but for Rachael this is a fantastic development from years prior, when her mental health challenges prevented her from going out into the community and doing the things she used to love.

“Afea’s wonderful staff – my Support Coordinator, Care Coordinators and great Carers – have opened up the community to me again,” she writes.

Rachael also loves art and drawing, and shared with us a piece of her beautiful artwork:

Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I have interests in dance, swimming, art & singing.

I was a professional dancer. It was my main concentration and I trained hard throughout my life. I injured my knee and couldn’t dance professionally anymore.

Hence, I spiralled down into a deep depression and required support.

When and why did you access our services?

I began receiving carer supports from Afea in 2018. I am now also working with one of Afea’s Support Coordinators, Riya.

I was extremely depressed and was diagnosed with severe mental illnesses.

I desperately needed one-to-one carer supports to motivate me, as my mental illnesses stopped me from going outside into the community.

In what ways have we helped you?

Afea’s wonderful staff – my Support Coordinator, Care Coordinators and great Carers – have opened up the community to me again.

It has taken a lot of time for me to accept my mental illnesses and recovery. But the Afea staff have been so patient, calm, encouraging, understanding and reliable.

What are your future goals?

I would like to volunteer in some way as a future goal. I want to be more socially active.

And be happy and healthy, which I can see is possible with the supports I am currently receiving.
