How Afea support in Melbourne is lifting Marija’s spirits - Afea Care Services
July 10th 2023

Our Melbourne-based client has clicked “instantly and so naturally” with her Afea Carer

“It’s amazing to see Marija and Shova getting along very well,” Borko writes to us in an email. Borko is the husband of our client, Marija, who is living with cerebral palsy and experiencing depression and anxiety.

But things are changing for the better. Based in Melbourne, Marija receives support from Afea for Support Coordination, Plan Management and Core support services.

A tremendous difference

Borko tells us that assistance from support worker Shova and the rest of the Afea care team is making a “tremendous difference” in their lives.

Spending time with Shova is certainly helping lift Marija’s spirits.

“Shova is a great woman who has happened to click instantly and so naturally with Marija, it’s been God’s love and work done for us,” he writes.

Borko and Marija are Roman Catholics of Croatian descent, born and raised in Bosnia. They heard about Afea from the Brotherhood of St Laurence, a non-profit organisation based in Melbourne.

Weekly support

“Soon after speaking to Afea, they sent me Daniel [Humagain], who has thrown himself to work faster to get Marija everything she needs,” Borko recalls.

As Marija’s support coordinator, Daniel assisted in engaging her with a support worker, Shova.

Shova now provides regular domestic assistance (light housekeeping) and community participation support every week.

Shova would take Marija out to a local café for lunch and accompany her to church. She is also available to take Marija to her medical appointments if Borko is not available.

Back at the Afea office, Marija and Borko are supported by their Client Coordinator, Maria, who ensures all their requests and questions are answered promptly.

Marija’s Goals

Daniel has connected Marija with an occupational therapist, physiotherapist and psychologist to further build her capacity.

“Marija’s goals are to become more relaxed and independent as possible,” Borko shares. “We’d like to spend more quality time with our daughter, other family members and friends. Shova is always welcome in our home!”
