Meet Our Accounts Officer, Laura - Afea Care Services
February 28th 2024

From KFC superstar to NDIS finance whiz!

Laura’s first experience in the workplace was as a worker at a fast-food restaurant at the age of 16, but even then, she already knew she wanted to help people.

“There were a few people who would come in with disabilities, and when I was taking their orders, I felt how much I really wanted to help them.”

One Cert IV and a degree in Accounting later, Laura is now helping NDIS participants as Afea’s Accounts Officer.

Financial side of the NDIS

“I wanted to help make a difference to the people’s lives in the community by helping them with the financial side of the NDIS.”

Laura first joined as an Accounts Payable Officer for Afea Plan Management. “I processed the invoices for the clients and ensured their funding was used correctly,” Laura shares.

“I then transitioned to the Accounts Officer role at Afea where I now look after the Service Agreements and budgets for the clients.”

When Laura finished school, she enrolled in a Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping at TAFE. One of her instructors encouraged her to “take it further and do a degree in Accounting.”

‘Supportive and friendly’

She followed this advice, and she has now been working at Afea for more than two years.

“Afea is such a supportive and friendly work environment, and even though there are separate divisions, we all have the same goal and support each other,” she says. “We truly care about our clients and are always willing to go above and beyond.”

Do you have any pets?

I have a dog, his name is Beau. He’s a Jack Russell cross chihuahua. He’s six years old. He’s very loud, but that’s mainly because I rile him up.

What was your first job like?

My first job was working at KFC, it was actually really fun because all my best friends worked with me, and a lot of people in my year, we all actually worked together. We used to wear name badges and we would switch them around. We also had fake ones made, like Regina George from Mean Girls or Beyonce. So yeah it was really fun.

If I ask my friend three words to describe me, it would be:

Stylish, caring and intelligent!
