A Spotlight on our Carer, Kim - Afea Care Services
November 3rd 2022

Kim has been with the Afea family as a support worker since 2017 and is now supporting many of our NDIS clients living with mental health challenges.

Kim enjoys her flexible hours with Afea as she can keep her “love tank” full by balancing her work and home life.

You can see this balance in her fun and adventurous life experiences, including jumping out of a plane with her pet Pom, Bubbles!

Can you tell us about yourself and your background?

I was born in Australia to a Scottish mother and Australian father. I’m the eldest of three: there’s a three-year gap between myself and my sister, and a 19-year gap between myself and my youngest brother. (He apparently was an accident, haha!)

Some of my hobbies include reading authors like the poet, Atticus, walking my Poms Bubbles and Abbey Rose, who are 16 and 17 years old, respectively.

I like doing word games such as Wordle, Quordle, Octordle and Sectordle, also playing Heardle!

I have a weakness for good pastries and good food, shopping and listening to all music types. I like live music and sport, such as NRL Sharkies and rugby, and yachting.

An interesting fact about myself: I once jumped out of a plane with Bubbles!

Bubbles and I are soul creatures. She’s my crazy half and a daredevil, too! She was 10 at the time. What an unreal experience.

When did you first join Afea as a carer?

January 18, 2017. If I really want something, I go by birthdays, and January 18 was my Papa’s birthday.

What led you to Afea?

I guess I saw our lovely website by accident, but when I read the core mission statement, I thought this was me. I go by my gut, and it proved to be a beautiful success.

What sold me was knowing it was a family business, with true down-to-earth values and ethics that aligned with my core and traditional values.

Do you have previous experience working in the aged care/NDIS sector?

I have experience in both aged care and NDIS. Currently I support the majority of mental health NDIS clients.

I find fascinating how each and every client has a unique validation of their past that leads them into a positive future. Everyone has a path that leads to where they are today, whether it’s through finding religion, or overcoming struggles with drugs and alcohol.

As carers at Afea, we become part of this journey so we can make a difference in a person’s wellbeing.

What is your proudest moment at Afea as a carer?

I really love seeing our clients grow and how they look forward to see us each time. I love how appreciated and supported we are. This is what makes the job awesome and what makes you want to show up. It’s kind of addictive!

What do you like most about Afea?

I really love the family-first approach, where we as carers have the availability to have work and home life balance to keep our love tank going for each and everyone. Also, everyone is supported by our managers, care coordinators and fellow home care workers without judgement.
